Adult speech therapy

Motor speech, dysarthria and apraxia

After a neurological change, speech can become slurred, quiet, or effortful, which is often dysarthria or apraxia of speech. It can be frustrating when your words do not come out as clearly as you mean them to. We help you speak more clearly and be understood more easily in everyday conversation.

What you might notice

  • Speech sounds slurred or harder to understand
  • Your voice has gotten quieter or more monotone
  • Talking takes more effort than it used to
  • People ask you to repeat yourself more often
  • Your mouth does not seem to move the way you intend

How we help

We evaluate how your speech is being affected, then target clarity, strength, and pacing in ways that fit your daily communication. Terri evaluates and Allee delivers the sessions under her supervision. For adults with Parkinson's or other conditions that reduce loudness, we work on speaking with more volume and precision so you are understood.

What a session looks like

Sessions use focused exercises and lots of real speaking practice, working on things like slowing down, over-articulating, and projecting your voice. We tailor the drills to your goals and give you home practice so the clearer speech carries into your week.

We adapt therapy to your condition and stage, whatever your age or how recently things changed.

Ready when you are

Common questions

What is the difference between dysarthria and apraxia?+

Dysarthria involves weakness or reduced control of the speech muscles, so speech can sound slurred or quiet. Apraxia is trouble planning the movements for speech. Our evaluation identifies what is going on so we target it correctly.

I have Parkinson's and my voice has gotten soft. Can you help?+

Yes. We work on speaking with more volume and clarity so you can be understood more easily. We tailor practice to your needs and keep it practical for daily life.

Can my speech really get clearer?+

Many adults improve their clarity and how easily others understand them with focused practice. We set realistic goals together and adjust as we go.
