Stuttering in children

Many children go through a stretch of bumpy talking, and for some it sticks around and starts to feel hard. If your child is getting stuck on words or avoiding speaking, support can help. We focus on easier, more comfortable talking and on keeping your child's confidence strong.

What you might notice

  • Repeats sounds or whole words, like b-b-ball
  • Stretches sounds out or gets stuck with no sound coming
  • Tenses up in the face or body while trying to talk
  • Avoids certain words or holds back from speaking
  • Seems aware or bothered by the bumps in their speech

How we help

We evaluate your child's speech and how they feel about talking, then choose strategies that fit their age and personality. Terri sets the plan and Allee delivers the sessions under her supervision. We work on smoother talking while also protecting the joy and confidence your child brings to conversation.

What a session looks like

Sessions feel relaxed and encouraging, with games and conversation that let your child practice easier speech without pressure. We coach families too, so the way we respond at home helps rather than adds worry.

Approaches differ for a preschooler versus a school-age child, so we match the strategies to your child's age and needs.

Common questions

Will my child grow out of stuttering?+

Some children do, especially younger ones, but it is hard to predict. Early support is gentle and can help either way, so reaching out is never the wrong move.

Should I correct my child when they stutter?+

Usually it helps more to slow down, listen patiently, and give them time rather than correct them. We will show you specific ways to respond that ease the pressure.

Is the goal to make stuttering disappear completely?+

Our goal is easier, more confident communication. For some children that means smoother speech, and for others it means talking freely without fear, even if some bumps remain.
