Swallowing and dysphagia
Swallowing is something most of us never think about until it becomes difficult. Trouble swallowing, known as dysphagia, can make eating and drinking uncomfortable or even unsafe. We help you work toward safer, more comfortable swallowing so meals can feel like a pleasure again.
What you might notice
- Coughing or choking during or after meals
- A feeling that food is sticking in your throat
- Pain or effort when swallowing
- Avoiding certain foods or textures because they feel unsafe
- Unintended weight loss or frequent throat clearing at meals
How we help
We evaluate how you are swallowing and build a plan to make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable. Terri evaluates and Allee delivers the sessions under her supervision. Some swallowing concerns are best assessed in person so we can observe closely, and we will let you know when an in-office visit or a medical exam is the right next step.
What a session looks like
Sessions may include exercises to strengthen and coordinate the swallow, along with strategies and texture adjustments that make meals safer. We tailor everything to you and coach anyone who helps at mealtimes so the plan works at home.
We adapt swallowing care to your needs and health history, whatever your age.

Common questions
When is difficulty swallowing an emergency?+
If you have sudden, severe trouble swallowing, cannot breathe, or are choking and cannot clear it, call 911 right away. This page is about ongoing therapy, not emergencies.
Why might I need an in-person assessment?+
Some swallowing issues need close, hands-on observation to evaluate safely, and certain cases call for medical imaging. We will tell you honestly when in-person care or a physician referral is warranted.
Can swallowing improve with therapy?+
Many people improve the safety and comfort of their swallow with targeted exercises and strategies. We build a plan around your specific needs and adjust as you progress.
